Couples

I work with many couples experiencing a variety of challenges within their relationship but the most common issues are communication and trust issues.

I utilize the Gottman Method Couples Therapy (www.Gottman.com) in my practice and find this approach to be the most effective with couples.  The approach is research based and looks at the strengths and weaknesses of a couple.  There is a thorough assessment period lasting about 3 - 4 weeks in which I gain a clear understanding of the history and current problems between the couple.  Here is the what you can expect during the assessment period:

Week 1: Session with the couple to learn about the presenting issues, couple's history and family history.  Each couple individually complete online surveys ($29 per couple that goes to the testing center) to learn patterns of function and dysfunction within the relationship.

Week 2: 50 minute session with each individual of the couple to learn about the commitment to the relationship, personal and conjoint goals and motivations.

Week 3: Session with the couple to process results from the online survey, determine commitment to work on the relationship and develop treatment goals.

Once the assessments are complete we will begin treatment! I have completed level 2 training of Gottman Method Couples Therapy.

Individuals

I work with both young, middle and older adults in a variety or transitional difficulties but have most experience working with mood disorders.  Transitional difficulties could include, leaving for college, getting married, new mother/father or any other stressors that cause a shift in your ability to cope positively.

Mood disorders consist of anxiety (ex: generalized, specific phobias and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and depressive disorders (ex: major and persistent).  I utilize both Cognitive Behavioral and humanistic approaches while working with individuals.

Adolescents/Family

In my practice (and from my trainings) I also work with adolescents (junior high - high school) and/or family counseling.  I work with at-risk youth who are involved with risky behaviors including, thoughts of suicide, self-harm, problems with the law, and low self esteem.  Again, I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with individuals.  Treatment with adolescents often takes a longer with adolescents due to some trust issues, however, I have found that I generally gain a positive rapport with adolescents.
